Edit
Kanji (漢字) are Chinese characters that are used in the modern Japanese writing system along with hiragana and katakana. Included in Kanji are Kokuji (国字), which are Japanese-made Chinese characters, Ryakuji (略字), which are Japanese colloquial simplifications, and most importantly, Shinjitai (新字体), which serve as a domestic equivalent to Simplified Chinese characters, whose simplifications can differ from their Chinese counterparts (contrasted by Kyuujitai [舊字體], equivalent to Traditional Chinese characters).
Since almost all Japanese text will have kanji, this tag is useless.
