t-44
The T-44 was a Soviet medium tank developed by Design Bureau No. 183 from 1943 to 1944. Experience from the Great Patriotic War showed that T-34 tanks of all variants were extremely vulnerable in battles against German Pz.V Panther or Pz.VI Tiger tanks due to insufficient armor protection. Consequently, the primary objective in designing the new tank, which was later designated the T-44, was to reinforce its armor. Although mass production of the tanks began in late September 1944, a stable production schedule was not established until the end of the year because it was necessary to continue manufacturing the required T-34s for the front. Between 1944 and 1947, 1,823 T-44s were produced, yet the only instance of these tanks being used in combat was during the Soviet Army’s suppression of the Hungarian Uprising. Nevertheless, the T-44 served as a bridge between World War II–era equipment and later postwar vehicles, particularly the numerous and famous T-54s.
