cactuar

サボテンダー

A recurring creature in the Final Fantasy series. Based on Japanese haniwa statues, they are bent-limbed cactus creatures known for their 1000 Needles attack. They give large amounts of Ability Points when defeated, but are hard to hit and prone to running away, making them similar to Dragon Quest's metal slime.

Their Japanese name, Sabotender, is a portmanteau of "saboten" (cactus) and "pretender". "Sabotender" is the name for the species in the MMO localizations, where the creatures also have a deviant design.

The sentient cacti in Final Fantasy XII are Cactoids.
