A traditional trap used by Japanese fisherman to catch octopus. A pot attached to a rope is lowered into the water, octopus with their natural tendency to hide from predators in small dark crevices will hide in the pot, then fisherman will pull up the pot later with the octopus inside. Japanese artwork will often eroticize the octopus pot as a tentacle pit.
