The ♂ symbol representing the male gender. This symbol is considered to be a stylized representation of the shield and spear of Mars from Roman mythology.

Traditionally the symbol for the planet Mars in astrology or the symbol for iron in alchemy, it's more commonly seen as a symbol for the male gender, where it often indicates a trap character or yaoi works.

See venus symbol for the ♀ symbol representing the female gender.
