A long-running role-playing game series by Square Enix. The first game in the series was released in 1987, with 16 numbered main entries released to date.
The series is mostly an anthology series, with each game having a different setting, plot, and main characters. The franchise is linked by several recurring elements, including game mechanics, enemies, and recurring character names.
Final Fantasy first appeared in 1987 in reaction to Enix's Dragon Quest. Contrary to what is often said, while Square wasn't doing great at the time, the first game wasn't made as a last ditch attempt to save the company. It did end up being a great commercial success and as a result, subsequent titles (each set in a different universe) were published ever since.
For the first game in the series, see Final Fantasy I.
