A small mat or rug placed at the entrance of a home or building, typically just outside or inside the door. Its main purpose is functional - it allows people to wipe dirt, mud, snow, or moisture from their shoes before entering, helping keep interior floors clean.

While "welcome mat" often emphasizes hospitality with welcoming messages, "doormat" is a more general term that can refer to any mat at a doorway, regardless of design or message.
