I think Zun will know what will happen if Aya had pointy ears, she will go down the popularity ladder dramtically and even lose several million Touhou Fans. Although this could be a one off picture caused by the artist to spook us.

Didn't his blog said those pictures were taken mid-development? Maybe the ears won't be there when the full game is released.
Oh my god.... the ears do bother me... ;_; Hopefully ZUN will fix this error in the full released game. Also, that armband is familiar...(*cough*Haruhi*cough*).
the official picture ZUN put on the screenshots he's showed looks more like his SA style than his UFO though... might just be an old picture that he hasnt replaced in the game resources yet

This is what I'm hoping but with the fact the fanon guzzling fanbase running with this might give ZUN the idea to keep it that way.

The hair alone wouldn't be too bad, but the elf-ears are that is upsetting since it contridicts her ears in SWR.

We are complaining on the internet. How the fuck is this "taking it too far"? I can't imagine a less demanding and influential action.
The sheer amount of "baaaaw, he changed it now it sucks" is baffling. Honestly. Who CARES? So she has pointy ears now, big deal. Artists make design changes, whoop dee doo.
I really think there are some things ZUN can't draw (Satori's sausage-fingers, anyone?) and that he made a mistake that people are now running wild with.
Kind of parallels the whole yukkuri_shiteitte_ne phenomenon; except that because this changed a beloved character, rather than being a parody, there's a bit more RAGE over it.
For those asking why, losing something familiar isn't easy.
All they're doing are making her look more youkai-ish. It makes sense that ZUN would do that, considering how most of the Touhou characters don't look AT ALL like youkai/etc.

If you look at the ancient Japanese youkai depictions (and descriptions), most of them could instantly fill the cast for any of the King's or Lovecraft's most bizarre works.
Saying the ears are making them "youkai-ish" is like saying the use of "oscar mike" makes MW2 a realistic simulation of modern warfare.

Considering that ZUN has *never* drawn her ears before...maybe they were just pointy all along and we, the fans, didn't know it. For all we know, the rest of the youkai may in fact be pointy eared.
