A cockatoo is pretty much the worst pet bird. It's like keeping a spoiled 5 year old that stays spoiled and 5 for longer than your natural lifespan, except that the bird really can bite your fingers off. Keeping one is an exercise in masochism.

Parrots are hit and miss. They are either really awesome or really awful. A former boss of mine had an african grey parrot and it was awesome. He could imitate nearly anything and would do so for effect - For example, he would imitate the phone ringing to summon humans. Another thing he would do is call the dog into the room by imitating his owner ("Here dog! Here doggy!"). When the dog came into the room and started looking for the human he'd scold the dog ("BAD DOG! BAD DOG!"). The dog would run away in confusion and the bird would laugh at him. He'd also call the cats but, being cats, they ignored him.
