Google image search "six-in-one chainmail" or "eight-in-one chainmail" and you'll see what it actually looks like - the more rings each individual ring interlocks with, the more protection chainmail gives, and the less likely it is to be ripped.
This actually looks a lot like a chain you see in gold jewelry, and is two-in-one for most of the links. The artist probably used some jewelry for their model on the details.
