「スペちゃんは羽根つきに
込められた願いを知っていますか？」

顔に墨を塗るための筆ペンを
私に差し出しながら、不意に
グラスちゃんがそんなことを聞いてきた。

「羽根つきに込められた願い……？」

「この羽根の先の木の実には、
『健康でありますように』
という願いが込められていて……
羽子板は、『様々な厄をハネのけて、
健やかに美しく育ちますように』
という願いを込めて
お正月に贈られる物なんですよ」

「へぇー！」

「ですので羽根つきは本来、
打ち合って競うのではなく、
互いの健康を願って
長く打ち合い続けるものなんです」

「ええっ、そうだったんだ！
じゃあ次からはなるべく長く続けなきゃ！
……あっ、じゃあハイ！ グラス先生！
もしかして罰ゲームで顔に墨を塗るのも
なにか理由があったりしますか？」

「いい質問です、スペシャルウィークさん。
一説では墨の黒は魔を払う色とされていて、
それを顔に塗ることで魔除けとなり、
身が守られると考えられているそうですよ」

「なので、万が一
羽根を落としてしまっても、
墨を顔に塗れば大丈夫、ということですね」

「ただの罰ゲームじゃないんだね！
――よし！」

受け取った筆ペンに
ぎゅっと力を込めて深呼吸をする。

「グラスちゃんが
一年間ケガなく走れますように」
右目に一筆、大きな丸。
「風邪とか病気になりませんように」
左頬に一筆、斜めに線。
「美味しいものをたくさん食べて、
たくさん笑ってくれますように」
左頬にもう一筆、斜めに線。

一筆一筆に想いを込める。
友だちとして、ライバルとして
いつまでもどこまででも
一緒に走れますようにと――

「……たくさんお祈りをしてくれて
ありがとうございます、スペちゃん。
でも、ふふっ、ちょっと塗りすぎですね？」

「え？ わぁ！？ ごめんなさい！！！！」

"Hey, Spe. Do you know about the secret meaning behind hanetsuki?"

Grass asks me this as she raises a brush dripping with black ink towards my face.

"The secret meaning behind hanetsuki?"

"Well, the nut at the end of the birdie signifies good health. And the paddle is given as a gift during New Year's in hopes that the recipient will grow up to be healthy and beautiful. Basically, it wards off bad luck."

"Wow!"

"So hanetsuki was never meant to be a competitive game—you hit the birdie back and forth for good health!"

"Whoa, I never would've thought that! If that's how it is, then we gotta keep our rally going for as long as we can! ...Oh, Ms. Wonder! I have a question! Is there also a reason why we paint the loser's face with ink?"

"Great question, Special Week. Some theorize that the black ink was meant to ward off evil spirits, which made painting someone's face an act of protection from potential harm. That way, even if a feather falls off, you can simply paint your face to stay safe."

"So it's not just a punishment for losing! ...All righty!"

Special Week squeezes the brush in her hand and takes a deep breath.

"One large circle around your right eye so you can run all year without getting hurt. A diagonal line on your left cheek so you don't get sick. And another line on your left cheek to make an 'x' so you can eat lots of yummy food and laugh a whole bunch!"

"I put my well-wishes into every stroke, so let's keep running together as both rivals and friends—now and forever!"

"Thank you so much, Spe! Hehe, I think you used a bit too much ink though."

"Huh? Whoa! You're right—I'm so sorry!"
