  • A is for Ammit

Finally Kicking off this project! Been wanting to do some mythology-related work for a long time now, and while others have done basically the same idea before, I thought I'd try my hand at illustrating a creature/character for each letter of the alphabet. I haven't done anything strictly creature-based in a while, so I had a good excuse for it! I also want to go across a ton of different cultures, so most will be different, though some cultures like the Greeks and Romans have such a huge pantheon, including more than one couldn't be avoided. Most info on these guys will come from wikpedia and other sources. Some will be mythological, others will be from folklore, and others are cryptids.

So without further explanation, here's the letter A!

    Name: Ammit, Ammut, Ahemait.
    Area of Origin: Egypt

With a name meaning 'Devourer' or 'Soul-Eater', Ammit was a female demon from ancient Egypt. The beast was comprised of the head of a crocodile, the frontal half of a lion, and the back-end of a hippo; the three largest man-eaters known to the Egyptians. Ammit lived near the scales of justice in the Egyptian underworld. There, Anubis weighed the heart of a person against the feather of Ma'at, the goddess of truth. If the heart was deemed un-pure, Ammit would devour it and the person would be unfit to continue their journey towards immortality. The person's soul would then be forever restless, likened to 'dying a second time'.
