Do you reward yourself after you finish something?
I've been thinking about this a lot lately. And honestly, I think it might be one of the most underrated skills there is.
Look at that to-do list in the painting. Everything crossed off. Report submitted. References read. Presentation prepared. Library visited. And at the very bottom, the only item still waiting is eating ramen. Not crossed off. Saved. Because some things deserve to be the reward, not just another checkbox.
It's 11:47pm. The city is quiet outside. And this bowl of ramen? This is the whole point of the day.
I didn't always think this way.
There was a period where I just worked. Finished one thing, moved immediately to the next. No pause, no celebration, no acknowledgment that something had been completed. Just forward, always forward, like stopping for even a moment would break the momentum.
And for a while it worked. Until it didn't.
Slowly, without really noticing, I started to dread the things I used to love. The work that once felt exciting started feeling heavy. I'd sit down to do something I genuinely cared about and feel... nothing. A kind of grey flatness where the motivation used to be.
I burned myself out not by working too hard, but by never giving myself a reason to come back.
I heard something once that really stayed with me: "Stop while you still enjoy it." Not when you're exhausted. Not when you've hit a wall. While you still like it. While there's still something left in the tank that wants to return tomorrow.
